Los Angeles Backyard

A historical interpretation of a backyard renovation for a mid-century modern residence on a hill.
This redesigned backyard expands the communal living space of a 1950s house for its inhabitants and guests.
Drawing inspiration from original photographs captured by architectural photographer Julius Shulman seven decades earlier, material continuity and sinuous forms integrate new with existing, extend interior to exterior, blend softscape with hardscape, and draw one’s attention out toward the ecology of an ever-changing city.
